The Following plates were all created whilst I was experimenting with Carborundum grit and exploration of surface texture in print. Initially inspired by Kazimir Malevich and Clyfford Still, I looked at shapes forms and textures and using different coarseness of the grit.
This can be quite a painterly form. I was a little disappointed by the Still inspired prints as they did not create a more opaque impression. However the use of Carborundum creates great surface texture to print from. It can be applied extremely thickly, the coarser the grit the more it holds the ink when printing creating a surface that looks like the grit is still on it.
By cutting the plates up into fragments, I have started to play with the idea of void, either in surrounding fragments of printed surface with space or with layering of plates to create depth.
